Abstract

This study examines the psychopathological and psychosocial effects associated with prolonged detention-related violence and enforced disappearances on descendants and relatives of victims in Guinea. It aims to explore the clinical manifestations and psychosocial consequences experienced by families confronted with the disappearance of parents or relatives in a context of state violence. A mixed-methods approach was adopted, combining semi-structured clinical interviews with the International Trauma Questionnaire (ITQ), which assesses symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) according to ICD-11 criteria. The study included 27 descendants and relatives of victims of enforced disappearances and prolonged detention. The findings reveal several psychopathological and psychosocial manifestations, including a persistent sense of threat among 48.1% of participants, traumatic memory in 37%, inhibited grief in 33.3%, emotional dysregulation in 25.9%, and alterations in the sense of self in 22.2%. Clinical narratives also highlight the role of institutional silence, the lack of recognition of the violence suffered, and the inability to obtain information about the fate of disappeared relatives in maintaining psychological distress. These findings suggest that state violence and enforced disappearances may produce long-term psychological effects that extend beyond direct victims and affect their descendants and relatives through complex mechanisms involving family memory, intergenerational transmission of trauma, and unresolved grief processes. However, given the exploratory nature of the study and the limited sample size, these findings should be interpreted with caution and further investigated through complementary research.
